Summer 2013 collection

For summer 2013, TER ET BANTINE has chosen the rough taste of stripped-down couture, a project designed to get to the very heart of the matter: elegant style and a fascination with shape.Manuela Arcari’s recurring sources of inspiration – work clothes, the 1960s, military uniforms, men’s tailoring – are turned into a collection of truly classic basic pieces: tops, skirts, jackets and trousers. Separate looks can be created from different complementary pieces, with the midriff exposed.

The structure of the garments is particularly original. Press-studs hold the framework of the designs together like pins; hems are reinforced with tailoring techniques; sharp-cut leather belts replace seams; parts of the interiors are visible from the outside. Technical detailing is highlighted and arranged over the body as a means of decoration.

The colour palette is highly selective: military green, a deep shade of petrol green, plus a host of black and whites which face off in optical motifs, a counterpoint to wide truncated stripes printed in metallic foil on beige, pink and white. Fabrics create solid and liquid alternatives: gazar silk and silk satin, canvas, poplin and duchess cotton.

Accessories – always in black leather – include ballet pumps with a masculine look and cross-over slippers, underlining the simple slant to the conversation.

Winter 2012 collection

Casual and concise as the anti-uniform of a revolt – this is Ter et Bantine’s dresscode for Autumn/Winter 2012/2013.
Manuela Arcari leaves day-to-day items behind to create a wardrobe packed with eccentric elements designed to have a powerful noir impact.
Military style items, geometrical expansions and a Gothic repertoire are recurrent traits that multiply and add on to generate the desired dramatic silhouettes.
The colour palette featuring shadowy hues is countered by a few dazzling white items. The dark vortex is built on every imaginable texture, namely leather, suede, row wool, bristly synthetics with wet-effect highlights, such as animal skin and satin weave. The hi-tech style provides them with an opportunity for juxtaposition. Furs, artful embroidery on ripped fabrics and hypnotic patterns flock-printed on cloth are arranged as recuperated inserts of skilled tailoring on a flawless backdrop. Ample coats and skirt suits find their counterparts in clear cut dresses and tops that stand out against male trousers.
The body is concealed for a self-absorbed, Gothic feminine allure.

A subtle but unremitting deconstruction of the classic codes characterizes the first accessories collection from Ter et Bantine. The shifting of parameters is both precise and emotional. Once again, as ever in her path of non typical designer, Manuela Arcari chooses to work around the idea of perfect imperfection, exploring the mental and material space that separates rigor from abandonment, reason from primal instinct. The defining elements of her style – essential and raw, concrete and pure – translate into objects of design charged with great evocative power: objects that are mysterious just like something familiar when it us seen through deformig lenses. The essential design is contradicted by details, by textures, by the constant play of masculine vs feminine. Control, the idea of less is more which is typical of Ter et Bantine morphs into brutalist classicism.

The collection revolves around a bunch of archetypal forms: the mannish lace-up, the well-to-do pump, the tango shoe, the ballerina flat. Proportions or details, however, are off-kilter, bringing the focus on design: elongated round toes, lacquered fussbets, curvy stiletto heels, thin ankle straps securing assertive forms to the foot, unexpectedly gracious raw cuts. Materials as well as colors swing between familiar codes and utter - punky or dryly demure – surprise: brushed lambskin in dense British hues, long-haired ponyskin in vivid colors, metallic, iridescent technical fabrics, garment-dyed velvet in dusty tapestry tones.

A vision that is precisely out of balance, with a base of concrete pragmatism.

Summer 2012 collection

The Ter et Bantine summer collection is a dialogue between opposites, and the conversation hinges upon the evocative male and female forms.
Once again, a no-frills style enhances the fundamental fashion themes, proportion, silhouette, volume: centimetre by centimetre, the garments advance over the body and cover it with concise, yet never minimal, meanings.
The assertive personality of formal masculine lines stoops to compromises with a contemporary need for fluidity: suits with tailored fronts are deconstructed in the back, thanks to the contrasting use of stiff and soft fabrics, while the verticality of trousers is defined by wide turnups in sculpted cotton.
The female imaginary is suggested by the semi-couture shapes of the 1950s, dresses become subtle yet effective shells crafted with the utmost simplicity, thanks to thick cottons in unordinary blends, like paper, that create organdie texture.
Cuts, sometimes technical and sometimes purely decorative, are interpreted in multiples for a look evoking fractal biologies: sculpted in impeccable cottons, while viscose or liquid silks collapse along the diagonal channels they form.
The basic colour palette is limited: white-greige and a selection of blues and greys as deep as stormy skies dotted with black clouds. Some reversible pieces offer contrasts in two-tone face-offs.
Stylised designs with a tribal flair, schematic garlands interpreted as molecular models are specifically placed on the body. A rainbow of pastel colours, like a long-lost object unexpectedly rediscovered, embellishes the dramatic setting of an eccentric detail.

Resort 2012 collection

The interval between severity and abandon is the material and mental space chosen by Manuela Arcari to create the first Ter et Bantine resort collection. The defining elements of her style ” reductionist and raw, concrete and cerebral, pure, subtle” are arranged in new configurations. Edges are softened; surfaces are played up. The design of each piece is neat and geometric; textures and prints introduce a bias, deceptive element. On the background, as a unifying thread, is control: the capacity to do more with less that is a trademark of Ter et Bantine.

The collection is a repertoire of possibilities. Construction stems from a keen study; abstraction is the result of a long editing conducted directly on and around the body. Style becomes an expression of modular feelings: it is made of pieces that are added one to the other, sometimes in unexpected ways. The base is clean: dresses and shirts with a concrete allure are predominant; non-orthodox insertions “flounces and smocks that run here and there” bring a salt of dry romanticism into the discourse. Prints are graphic, assertive, streaked with abstract exoticism: dots in various sizes, abstract motifs, stylized flowers redolent of the East. Textured fabrics add a tactile note.

The color palette is precise, with peaks of deliberate imperfection. White, black, grey and blue are prevalent. Fluorescent spots of pink, green and blue avoid the overall mix to feel too safe or understated. Prints create rhythm.

Materials are compact and pleasant to the touch: smooth poplins and textured cottons.

A vision of femininity as a balance of contradictions.
